Empowering Learning Programmes

These programmes offer a new approach to overcoming learning differences and difficulties for:

  • Parents and family members
  • Educational professionals such as teachers, principles, head teachers, special needs experts and those training in the education profession
  • Adult literacy tutors
  • Coaches, trainers and an ideal application for those with NLP and/or coaching training (but not essential)

These programmes are more than just a training course, you will have access to monthly Continuous Professional Development (CPD), our on-line resource centre and coaching from Olive Hickmott the creator of Empowering Learning.


Empowering Learning: Jumpstarting Literacy and Numeracy.

Empowering Learning is all about understanding the learners’ experiences, what makes for successful learning and establishing where learning can go wrong. Jumpstarting Literacy and Numeracy is one of a suite of programmes offered under this concept.

The Jumpstarting Literacy and Numeracy™ process includes three main tenets which can be seen below. These form the basis of the process and on the course you will learn how to impart this to your students easily, quickly and with rapid results. You will also get the research evidence supporting the process as well feedback from the principals and teachers who have been using it with such great effect in their schools and classrooms.

Mental Imagery is essential for reading, effective spelling, making sense of and remembering what is read, mental calculations, problem solving and legible handwriting.

Neuroscience has shown that fluent readers use 3 co-activated areas of the brain: knowing the pronunciation of the word, understanding the meaning and recognising the visual representation of the whole word.
As it is developed naturally by some students it was believed that this was an inherent skill and therefore could not be taught – we now KNOW that this is not the case and it can be learned through the Jumpstarting process.

Students learn most effectively when in the Optimal Learning State, i.e. relaxed body, alert mind. Some students cannot develop or control their mental imagery skills until they are in this state.

Results have shown that knowing how to get into this state easily helps to lower stress, increase concentration and focus and also improves memory and recall.

This skill is useful for the whole school and gives staff the tools for creating calmer students, calmer classrooms and a calmer school! Neuroscience has shown that being this state, often called ‘Flow’, helps students and staff to be more effective.

Mental Imagery skills can be learned provided the right training approach is applied.

Helping students become more meta-cognisant about their inner mental processes helps them recognise their existing strengths and adjust any ineffective learning strategies accordingly.

A ‘coaching’ approach is the best way to do this and includes:

  • Active listening.
  • The conscious use of language.
  • Asking questions from a position of curiosity and investigation.
  • Observing eye patterns, body language and other non-verbal communication.

Literacy skills: spelling, reading, reading comprehension and writing

Numeracy skills: mental arithmetic, geometry, addition and times tables, algebra

General learning skills: memory, concentration, revision and exam techniques
Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, Dysgraphia, Dyspraxia and ADHD.

You will practice the skills you are learning and go away with the confidence to teach others how to overcome the debilitating effects they are experiencing and become symptom free.

Teaching the Empowering Learning material is so rewarding. Never a day goes by without seeing immense change some across someone's face. As soon as you have completed this training you are encouraged to practice and keep records of your clients. The accreditation paperwork has an extremely useful format for your records.

This programme is now available as a series of 6 teleseminars so you can learn these skills on-line in the comfort of your own home, in an interactive setting, guided by Olive Hickmott.

The 2-day open programme is run by Olive Hickmott in Hertfordshire, Paula Monti in Berkshire and Sara Haboubi in the Republic of Ireland. All three trainers are available to train in specific groups in other locations by arrangement.

Empowering Learning: Pathways to Learning

This programme is for those professionals and parents who want to take this work further and make a real impact coaching those with various challenges about accessing learning. They may have diagnoses of ADHD, Tourettes, Dyspraxia, Aspergers, Autism, ASD, Sensory Processing Disorder, and many more undiagnosed combinations. Social, emotional and behavioral challenges often stop students successfully accessing learning despite the fact that they are most often very talented, visual learners.

This programme works on what is behind the behaviours and offers a range of simple tools to teach students, enabling them to find their own pathway into learning and using their exceptional skills in the most effective way.

This incorporates various techniques for improved sensory integration, core stability, fear reduction and concentration. You will help people understand their own experiences and be able to show them simple skills to make a real difference to their lives and learn as a family learning.

This programme is currently offered as a mixture of teleseminars, video recordings from our learning platform, practice and on-line coaching.

The Jumpstartiong Literacy and Numeracy programme is a pre-requisite for joining this training.

you can become a certified coach, after 50 hours documented coaching and eventually become a certified trainer.

This work has been further developed, now called Empowering Learning, simplified and extended for other learning difficulties such as ADD/ADHD, Dyspraxia, Tourettes, Dysgraphia, Aspergers and Autism and published in Bridges to Success - How to Transform Learning Difficulties. Empowering Learning is not a replacement for other educational practices and techniques it is complementary.
